RE: Sand Point Branch Library Siting
Dear Ms. Jacobs:
The Laurelhurst Community Club Board of Trustees requests that you consider siting the new Sand Point Branch Library at either Sand Point Elementary School or on University of Washington property at Sand Point/Magnuson Park.
Sand Point Elementary School is School District property located at 6208-60th Avenue NE and is known as the Sand Point Education Center. There is plenty of offstreet parking. The facility currently houses classes offered by the North Seattle Community College Continuing Education Program and the Lifetime Learning Center as well other programs. We believe that a Sand Point Branch Library at this location would meet the Opportunity Fund criteria identified in the 1998 Libraries for All bond measure and would be a great asset to the facility.
As an alternative to the Sand Point Elementary School, we support siting the Sand Point Branch Library on property at Sand Point/Magnuson Park owned by the University of Washington.
We supported the Opportunity Fund proposal for a Sand Point Branch Library with the proviso that the new branch library not be located on park property. This is because of our commitment to Initiative 42, which prohibits the use of park property for nonpark purposes unless a land exchange takes place.
The Laurelhurst community has a long history of support and involvement in our public libraries. The Sand Point Branch Library will provide a wonderful resource for our neighbors and our neighborhood children, as well as surrounding communities and will ease the burden on the Northeast Branch. We hope you will consider our siting recommendations and keep us informed about the site selection process.
Sincerely,
|
